Hatch Chile season is upon us. Approximately from August 8th to September 22nd Hatch chiles will be available in stores and structured roasting events will be held all over the South Western United States. The Hatch Roasting 2015 schedule is listed on the bottom of this post.

I have personally received over 20 emails, facebook messages and blog post comments asking me when the Hatch Roasting 2015 will take place. Consider your request fulfilled. Below are the Hatch roasting events sponsored by Melissa’s Produce with Bristol Farms and Gelsons.
There are no doubt going to be other and smaller roastings across Southern California, but these are structured nicely and I have had good experiences.
What is a Hatch Chile?
Glad you asked! These are one of my favorite chiles with their unique earthy flavor. Since their availability is scarce, for about a month, they have a higher perceived flavor profile.

Their closest cousin is the Anaheim chile, although the unique growing environment in the Hatch Valley of New Mexico with hot days and cold nights lends a unique flavor that should be tried at least once in your life.

What is a Hatch Chile Roasting?
Simply, these chilies taste best when they are roasted. The fire roasting brings out the complex flavors of the chiles and makes them versatile in recipes.
At a roasting event, giant barrel shaped cages are rotated with large motors while giant propane burners roast the chiles until the flesh and soft and skin in burnt.

When you get home you simply peel of the skin and store them for the rest of the year.
